2024 Annual Conference: Patients at the Center of the Management of Rheumatic Diseases Mental Health - Chronic Pain

Holistic Care and Patient Empowerment: The Key to Quality of Life and Mental Health in Managing Chronic Diseases

The empowerment of patients and a holistic approach to managing chronic diseases were the central themes of the 2024 Chronic Pain Conference, held on November 1-2 at the My Way Hotel & Events in Patras, organized by the Hellenic League Against Rheumatism (ELEANA) and the Cyplar.

Patients suffering from chronic pain require not only appropriate medication but also comprehensive support encompassing their physical, mental, and social health. In this context, empowerment involves equipping patients with the necessary knowledge and tools to be well-informed about their health status and treatment options. This enables them to make the best decisions regarding their health and life. An informed patient actively participates in their care, collaborating with their physician to develop the most suitable, personalized treatment plan. Patient associations, such as ELEANA, play a critical role by offering support, information, and opportunities for empowerment. Physicians are encouraged to inform their patients about such associations, as being part of a support network can significantly impact patients’ lives. The holistic approach to chronic disease management emphasizes that treatment should not be limited to addressing symptoms with medication. It should consider all factors affecting an individual’s health and quality of life. Beyond medical treatment, attention is given to psychological support, physical activity, nutrition, and social engagement. Collaboration among patients, physicians, pain specialists, and other health professionals—psychologists, clinical dietitians, physiotherapists, social workers, and others—enables a comprehensive approach to managing chronic pain, enhancing overall health. The conference program also featured discussions on new therapeutic options, such as medicinal cannabis. Now managed by specialized doctors (anesthesiologists, algologists, neurologists, oncologists, rheumatologists, etc.), it represents a modern tool for pain management. However, its use is strictly advised only after thorough evaluation by trained physicians, considering the patient’s history and possible comorbidities, with continuous monitoring. Participants were cautioned against purchasing cannabis products online or from unauthorized sources, as this could pose serious health risks. Overall, the 2024 Chronic Pain Conference provided valuable insights for all participants, highlighting the need for a holistic view and approach to patients living with chronic pain, particularly those with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases. The conference emphasized the importance of empowering patients in Greece and Cyprus to build resilience and achieve a better quality of life.
